Understand URL handle and Handle in Shopify CSV files

The product handle identifies a product and helps determine its storefront URL. Current Shopify exports use URL handle; older files can use Handle. Shopify documents backward compatibility with older column names.

A repeated handle is not automatically a duplicate product.

Several rows can belong to one product. A blue shirt and a red shirt that are variants of the same product normally share a handle. Extra product images may also occupy additional rows.

This example represents one product with two color variants, not two unrelated products. Do not deduplicate rows using the handle alone.

When different products need different handles.

If unrelated products share a handle, review the grouping against the source catalogue. Do not generate replacement handles without considering existing products and URLs.

Check these conditions.

• New products require a Title column. Variants also require the handle column.
• Updates require both URL handle and Title columns.
• Handles cannot contain spaces. Keep identifiers stable when updating existing products.
• A blank title on a continuation row is different from a missing first product title.

RowReady recognizes common continuation rows and warns about whitespace in handles. It does not compare against your live store or verify every variant grouping. A report with no issues is not proof that the grouping matches your intent.

Handle and SKU are different identifiers.

A handle groups a product. A SKU describes a variant’s stock identifier. Repeated SKUs are flagged for review by this checker; they are not universally treated as import blockers. Confirm the stock conventions used by your fulfilment workflow.
